Say what you want about France and the culture and, while you’re at it, go ahead and get any stereotypical, World-War-II- themed quips out of your system too, because, regardless, there is no denying the fact that some of the best art, music, food, drinks and even performances have all come out of France and the only thing better than reading about it or hearing of it is actually seeing it for yourself. However, there are a few things you need to consider before you buy the plane tickets and throw on the home security systems.

For starters, you need to understand that there is a culture in France that does not think tremendously well of the west. That doesn’t mean you will be impeded or have great difficulty but you should expect an attitude and a kind of “cold shoulder.” You should also invest in a good pair of walking shoes if you expect to get the most out of your trip. Some of the most beautiful landmarks in the country are a little off the beaten path. And, of course, bring your appetite because the food and drink in this fascinating country is to die for – they don’t call it the wine country for nothing.

Brussels in Belgium is the epicenter of the European Union and NATO headquarters. Tourists love the vibrant beauty of Brussels and the well-known featured attractions. One of the coolest attractions is Cinquantenaire Park, or Parc du Cinquantenaire. The most eye catching feature of the park is the Triumphal Arch (Arc de Triomphe), which was coincidentally completed in 1905, the 75th anniversary of Belgium’s independence.

The town’s square is among the coolest attractions in Brussels. Tourists from all over the world are drawn to the central market area where activity is constantly buzzing and the monumental town hall that towers over the center speaks volumes of French inspired design. Some of the most influential men and women, such as the Archduchess Isabella have been attracted to the central market square, commonly referred to as “The Grand-Place”.

Brussels is known for its artistic innovation. In fact, the Belgian comic strip center is formed around an Art Noveau Setting that boasts the history of comic strip heroes. One of the most popular artistic sculptures is the Manneken Pis, or peeing boy, located near the Grand-Place at the corner of Eikstraat and Stoofstraat. For a memorable artistic experience, it is best to visit Brussles during the third week of August when the market is beautifully decorated with a carpet of flowers.

Here are seven European landmarks a tourists should see if they’re visiting the continent — a real bucket list!

The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
Of course you’re going to visit the Eiffel Tower. This Parisian edifice, built in 1889, was not much liked when it was first built. Now, of course, it’s one of the most beloved and visited landmarks on earth.

The Parthenon, Athens, Greece
The Parthenon is a stunningly beautiful temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, the patroness of Athens, Greece. It’s been round since 438 B. C. and is currently being restored while the Greek government still has money.

30 St. Mary Axe, London, UK
Londoners call it the Gherkin, but it more resembles those dud bombs that one finds in old Bugs Bunny cartoons. Forty stories tall, the top floor bar has a panoramic view of the city.

The Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark
This is a beautiful and fun amusement park/garden in Copenhagen, opened in 1843. Check out the rides, the lake, and the improbable pagoda!

What’s left of the Berlin Wall, Germany
This monument to the Cold War is now a place where artists fearlessly express themselves.

Basilica of the Sagrada Famlia in Barcelona, Spain
Antoni Gaud’s amazing, beautifully weird, never finished church is now the symbol of Barcelona.

The Roman Forum, Rome, Italy
A tourist can get beautifully lost in this ancient complex of temples, shrines and government buildings in the heart of Rome.

There are many wonderful places to visit in Europe, however some should not be missed. One of the most visited cities by Americans is London because of the strong ties to the United States and strong British traditions. Everyone should have a chance to see the royal palace and all of the historic sites that have to do with the monarchy. From France you can travel under the English Channel through the chunnel to Paris. This city is known as one of the most romantic cities in the world and also the “City of Lights”. From the Eiffel tower to the Louver you will not run out of things to see in Paris.

You can take a train to Italy from Paris. One of the most interesting cities in the world. Venice, Rome is one of the most unusual and beautiful cities in the world. You could spend days wandering through the scenic streets getting lost in the beauty and wonder of the ancient culture that still exists. From Italy you may want to take a train up to a fascinating city that is out of a story book. Innsbruck, Austria in the European Alps still has the look of a town where fairy tales were made. When you hear the church bells echo through the small town, you may believe you are in the middle of a dream. One city no one should miss is Santorini, Greece. You may need to fly into Athens and then take a boat or small airplane to this wonderful city. The trip is worth seeing the beautiful city set on a ancient volcano. This is the site of many American movies and the city is even more amazing in person. Each of these five cities should give you a taste of the world and each are different enough to give you a taste of the European area.
